## SUBSCRIPTIONS VS. API — THE DISTINCTION THAT SAVES YOU MONEY

There are two completely different ways to pay for AI, and confusing them is the #1 source of surprise bills.

**A subscription** is Netflix: flat monthly fee, use it a lot or a little, the bill never changes. You *cannot* accidentally overspend. **This is what beginners should use. Full stop.**

**An API (Application Programming Interface)** is a utility meter: you pay per token (roughly, per word) that flows in or out. It exists so software can call AI automatically — coding agents, apps you build, automations. It can be cheaper than a subscription for light use… and it can also run up a bill while you sleep, because *software* is spending your money, not your fingers.

**The rule:** if you're typing into a chat window or using Claude Code through a Claude plan, subscribe. Only touch API keys when a tool genuinely requires one (like Cline or Aider) — and the moment you create a key, go set a **monthly spending limit** in that provider's billing dashboard. Every provider has one. Five minutes now prevents the horror stories you've read about.

## THE HIDDEN COSTS NOBODY ADVERTISES

**1. The usage-limit squeeze.** "Unlimited" rarely means unlimited. Claude Pro can throttle you during a marathon session. ChatGPT Plus caps messages per 3-hour window. Cursor Pro meters your fast requests. The sticker price buys you a *ration*, and the ration determines whether $20 feels generous or suffocating. Heavy users: this is why $60–200 tiers exist. Light users: this is why you may never notice.

**2. The quiet downgrade.** Plans keep the same price while limits shrink or requests get routed to cheaper models. (Perplexity Pro's Deep Research went from effectively unlimited to ~20 runs/month in early 2026. ChatGPT routes some paid traffic to lighter models.) You aren't imagining it when a tool "feels dumber" — check the changelog before assuming it's you.

**3. The add-on stack.** $20 for Claude + $20 for Cursor + $10 for Copilot + $20 for Perplexity = $70/month, assembled one "it's just $20" decision at a time. Audit quarterly: cancel anything you didn't use in the last two weeks. Every tool here rents monthly — you can always re-subscribe.

**4. The ecosystem tax.** Microsoft 365 Copilot's advertised ~$21–30/user sits ON TOP of a required Microsoft 365 license. Grok's cheap tiers are bundled with X subscriptions. Gemini's best features assume Google One storage. Read what the price *assumes you already pay for*.

**5. Credit-burn in browser builders.** Lovable, Bolt, and friends charge in "credits" — and a stubborn bug can eat a month of credits in an afternoon of re-prompting. Fixed-fee tools don't punish you for debugging.

**6. Annual-plan lock-in.** Annual billing saves ~15%… on a market where the best tool changes every six months. Pay monthly until you've loved something for three straight months.

## WHAT SHOULD *YOU* ACTUALLY PAY?

**$0/month — The Rotation.** Gemini free + ChatGPT free + Claude free + DeepSeek free (public info only — it's China-hosted) + Perplexity free. Rotate when one caps you. Genuinely workable for learning and light building. Your cost is friction, not money.

**$20/month — The Builder (what this site teaches).** Claude Pro. It covers claude.ai chat AND Claude Code in VS Code — your builder and your build agent on one bill. ChatGPT free does your planning and debugging, Perplexity free does your research. This is the highest-value $20 in AI right now.

**$30/month — The Builder Plus.** Claude Pro + GitHub Copilot Pro ($10). Copilot gives you in-editor autocomplete while Claude Code does the heavy building. Nice, not necessary.

**$40–60/month — The Professional.** Claude Pro + Cursor Pro, or step up to higher Claude/Cursor tiers as limits pinch. If AI tools are earning you money, this pays for itself; if they aren't yet, stay at $20.

**$100+/month — You already know.** Max/Ultra/Heavy tiers are for people who hit limits daily and can name exactly which limit hurts. If you can't name it, you don't need the tier.

---

## FIVE RULES BEFORE YOU PAY FOR ANYTHING

1. **Free tier first, always.** Prove the value on your real work, not a demo video.
2. **One paid tool at a time.** Add a second only when you can say what the first one earns you.
3. **Monthly billing until you're sure.** The market moves too fast for annual bets.
4. **If it needs an API key, it needs a spending limit.** Set it the same day. No exceptions.
5. **Calendar reminder, first of every month:** "Which AI subscriptions did I actually use?" Cancel the rest without guilt — you can always come back.
